Restorative Justice is a community accountability process,

which invites all who are harmed by an incident to participate
in a facilitated conference with the person responsible for the harm.

Born out of Indigenous wisdom from around the world, Restorative Justice views
harm as a violation of community and relationships, rather than rules
and laws. As such, any attempt at accountability must bring the impacted
community together to address the ways people have been hurt.

Any consequences for the harms should be decided by the community and
center on the needs of those most impacted.

A community seeking to address a harm can be anything from a school or
classroom, to a nonprofit or small business, from a religious
institution, to a neighborhood, or a family.

Harms can range widely from theft or assault, to property damage or harassment,
from racism or abuse, to betrayal and deceit. They may include material loss and/or
intangible damage. Any emotional harm done is as important to unearth
and address as physical harm done.

Interpersonal conflict is a normal part of human relationships, and harm happens in all communities. Seeking to eradicate these is the wrong goal; developing the tools to deal with them provides us a way forward.

Note

As a white person who studied restorative practices at a predominantly white institution, I recognize the privilege I bring to this work and the ways in which my privilege unconsciously seeks to uphold white supremacy.

With this awareness, I commit to:

  • Seeking on-going knowledge and training from Black, Indigenous and other people of color leading Restorative and Transformative Justice work.

  • Making my services as affordable as possible, particularly for Black, Indigenous, people of color, and working-class communities who have suffered the most under a racist and classist criminal justice system.

  • Using my skills and passion to prioritize supporting communities dedicated to dismantling white supremacy and all other forms of oppression.
